A Toast to the Trees

On Sunday 28 September, Houghton Lodge Gardens blossomed into an apple-lover’s paradise, bursting with colour, laughter, and the sweet scent of autumn for the annual Apple Day celebration. Over 200 visitors explored the gardens and the Fluvii exhibition, joining in a day packed with lively, hands-on activities that celebrated nature, community and creativity.

Families followed a playful apple trail through the grounds, while the rhythmic beats of Morris dancers filled the air. Storyteller Michael O’Leary captivated audiences with tales that leapt from charming folklore to spine-tingling adventure.

Experts from Sparsholt College were on hand to share their horticultural wisdom, identifying an impressive 34 mystery apple varieties and offering visitors practical tips on pruning and fruit-tree care.

As the afternoon sun dipped, the festivities came to a joyful close with a toast to the trees and a traditional wassail chant to ward off any lingering spirits, marking the harvest in true seasonal style.
