Philip Surey (b. 1966)
Philip graduated from the City & Guilds of London Art School in 1996 and went on to work for Richard Kindersley and Ralph Beyer before establishing a busy workshop in London. He has exhibited at the Art and Antiques fair in Kensington Gardens, represented by art dealers William Agnew & Co and at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His clients include the National Trust, Tate Britain, Southwark Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Winchester Cathedral, Luke Hughes & Co, and the John Morgan Studio. Philip Surey Ltd has gained a growing reputation for architectural gilding projects in recent years.
Philip originates lettering by hand in a number of media; letter carving in stone, slate and wood, brush lettering and traditional signwriting. Often, he uses the brush to set out inscriptional work, which ranges from formal Roman to his own casual font ‘Phil Sans’. All lettering is designed by brush or pencil to suit its purpose and place, thereby creating a unique response to each commission.
