Annet Stirling (b. 1953)
Annet teamed up with Brenda Berman, a fellow City & Guilds London School student, in 1988 and founded Incisive Letterwork. Like most letter-cutters, they were trained in drawing specific alphabets for carving, usually historical, based on Roman capitals with Renaissance-influenced lower case and italic. Incisive Letterwork’s pieces include large architectural inscriptions, opening plaques and headstones. They have exhibited in all recent major lettering exhibitions, had two solo shows and Annet, since Brenda’s retirement in 2007, continues to explore the boundaries of legibility and abstraction in letterform. Her creative process begins with a sketch inspired by Roman numerals and evolves into a laser-cut corten steel piece designed on her computer using Illustrator. After being cut by a company in Barnsley, the steel is sent to her workshop, where she carefully rusts it to achieve its rich brown patina. Unlike regular steel, corten forms a stable outer layer of rust that protects it from further corrosion.
